Summer is one of the best times of the year to travel. Whether you're heading to the beach, exploring a new city, or hiking through the mountains, vacations often involve a lot more physical activity than we're used to. Long walks, carrying heavy luggage, climbing stairs, and standing in lines can all leave your muscles feeling sore and fatigued.

My family and I are currently exploring the beautiful Cinque Terre region of Italy. It's one of the most scenic places we've ever visited, with five colorful villages connected by winding streets, hiking trails, and what feels like thousands of stairs. While the views are incredible, our legs definitely know we've been putting in the miles!

After one full day of sightseeing, my son, Cole, started complaining that his legs were sore. Instead of calling it a day, I had him perform a few simple stretches to loosen up his muscles and improve his mobility. The same stretches have been helping me recover after long days of walking as well.

The truth is, your body isn't always prepared to go from a typical workweek to walking 15,000–20,000 steps a day on vacation. Tight calves, hamstrings, hip flexors, and glutes can all contribute to soreness and make each day of your trip a little less enjoyable.

The good news is that you don't need a lot of time or equipment to feel better. Spending just a few minutes stretching each morning or after a long day of sightseeing can help:

  • Improve flexibility and mobility
  • Reduce muscle tightness and soreness
  • Increase circulation
  • Decrease stiffness
  • Help you recover faster for the next day's adventures

I've included a video below demonstrating the same exercises we've been using throughout our trip. They're quick, easy to perform, and a great way to keep your body feeling its best while traveling.

If you have a vacation planned this summer, give these stretches a try before and after your busy days. A few minutes of movement can go a long way toward helping you enjoy your trip without being slowed down by sore muscles.

Safe travels, and enjoy your summer!
