Whether you're coaching from the sidelines, carrying kids on your shoulders, hacking golf balls, tackling home improvement projects, or simply trying to keep up with the demands of everyday life, being a dad is physically demanding. It's no surprise that one of the most common complaints we hear from fathers is, "My back is killing me."
While lower back pain is often accepted as a normal part of aging, it doesn't have to be.
Many dads spend years sitting at desks during the workweek and then ask their bodies to perform like athletes on the weekends. Add in long car rides, yard work, lifting children, sports, and the general wear and tear of daily life, and it's easy to see why the lower back can become stiff, weak, and painful.
The good news is that movement is often one of the best remedies.
A well-designed exercise program can help improve mobility, build stability, and increase the resilience of the muscles that support the spine. Contrary to popular belief, rest is not always the answer. In many cases, gradually strengthening the core, hips, and lower back can help reduce discomfort and improve function.
When it comes to lower back health, I encourage patients to focus on three key areas:
1. Improve Mobility
The hips and mid-back play a major role in how the lower back functions. When these areas become stiff, the lower back is often forced to compensate, leading to increased stress and discomfort.
2. Build Stability
Your spine relies on a team of muscles—including the abdominals, glutes, and deep spinal stabilizers—to provide support. When these muscles are weak or inactive, the lower back often bears more load than it should.
3. Stay Consistent
You don't need to spend hours in the gym. Just a few minutes of targeted exercises performed consistently can make a significant difference over time.
This Father's Day, instead of accepting that "bad backs" are just part of being a dad, take a few minutes to invest in your health. The lower back exercise routine included in this video was designed to help improve mobility, enhance stability, and keep you moving comfortably throughout the day.
Your family depends on you. Make sure your body can keep up with the job.
Happy Father's Day to all the hardworking dads out there—and here's to fewer aches, better movement, and many healthy years ahead.
